The best coffee in Cork?

... it won’t be for the lack of trying!

We have researched the fundamentals of good coffee making, judged the best practices and combined them to ensure that our coffee answers this question.

Our Methods:

The Beans Café Gusto use the best hand roasted coffee bean in Ireland – 100% Arabica – sourced from the Java Republic Roasting Company. The blend we use is the first Irish coffee ever to win the Great Taste award in London – the Oscars of the food industry! This blend gives a rich dark smooth coffee with a concentrated sweet flavour.

The Grind As ground coffee loses its flavour rapidly, we ensure its consistent freshness by grinding our beans to order with Burr grinders, which produce a powdery fine grind without any damage to the coffee.

The Tamp Tamping refers to the amount of pressure used to pack ground coffee into the filter. If the tamp is too firm the coffee will be burnt, too light and it will be watery and tasteless. We hand-tamp our ground coffee to guarantee perfect emulsification – thus allowing you to taste its complex range of flavours.

The Espresso Machine We use an Italian machine by Gaggia, who were not only the original inventors of the pressurised espresso machine but still set the standard in this technology. Our machine has been expertly set to provide accurate pressure and water volume for our wide range of coffees. It is also rigorously cleaned in order to avoid any contamination to the taste of your cup of coffee.

The Barista The most important component in good coffee is the human one so all our baristas – the term used for experienced espresso makers – have been professionally trained to a Master Barista standard to ensure they combine all the fundamentals before they present you with the perfect cup of coffee.

About Café Gusto

Café Gusto continues a long tradition of selling coffee at 3 Washington Street. The site was converted to a café from an antique shop in the summer of 1941, when the O’Brien family took up the lease at a rent of £11 per month. Not only was their coffee renowned but also their ice cream was every kid’s dream, especially when made up into their divine birthday cakes.

On taking over the lease in autumn of 2000, Marianne and Denis have transformed it using the best local designers and craftsmen to provide a perfect backdrop for customers to enjoy their food and drink. To further ensure this, they have spent a lot of energy in sourcing the very best ingredients, producers and suppliers, so that your first visit will not be your last.

These standards can also be seen around the café in the bespoke furniture which was designed by imago alternatives and the graphic design by Cork design consultants bite! associates.

Marianne has worked extensively in food trade in the city of London before returning two years ago to manage The Exchange Bar on George’s Quay.

Denis was a student of the Ballymaloe cookery school and has worked in Mulligan’s of Mayfair, Isaacs and The Bodega Bar and Restaurant but is probably better known for his involvement in club nights such Mór Disco, Telefunkin and Hi-Fi.

In July of 2006, Café Gusto opened their second outlet on the Lapp’s Quay Boardwalk, situated in front of the prestigious City Quarter office development built by Howard Holdings on the banks of Cork’s River Lee.
